Kaelen was born in the deep forges of a mountain hold on the material plane, the third son of a smith dynasty that had shaped steel for nine generations. He showed genius early: by thirty he had surpassed his father, by fifty he was commissioned by temples, kings, and eventually the church of Aethel, the forgotten god of chains. Aethel's faith was small but old, and its priests came to Kaelen with the holiest commission of his life: forge the Ceremonial Chain, a relic capable of binding a world-ending evil should one ever rise.
Kaelen spent seven years on the designs, perfecting every link, every rune, every temper. He never forged the final chain—the temple fell to a purge before the work began, and the designs were seized by soldiers serving a rising priest named Malakar.
Kaelen did not know what happened to his designs until it was far too late. Malakar, Aethel's most trusted priest, used Kaelen's blueprints to forge the chains that bound the god himself, then stole Aethel's heart and power to create the Phantom Zone as his phylactery. To silence the only man who could recognize the stolen work, Malakar framed Kaelen for a massacre: weapons forged in Kaelen's own workshop were used to slaughter a village, and the Inquisitor Shadowtongue—the same man who would later become the Archive's spymaster—presided over a rigged trial. Kaelen was dragged into the Zone thirty years ago, one of its first mortal prisoners.
Malakar made him an offer in those early days: forge for the Warden in comfort, and one day walk free. Kaelen refused. As punishment, he was sealed in the Forge of Broken Chains, given an anvil carved from a fragment of Aethel's first chain-link, and ordered to maintain the prison's chains and golems forever. He complied with the letter of his sentence—he repairs what must be repaired—but has never forged a weapon, a key, or a chain for the Warden's use.
Over three decades, the Forge became neutral ground: the Breakers leave their wounded, the Penitents leave their bread, and the Collaborators leave him alone out of superstitious fear of the lava and the old smith's silence.
His apprentice Torva was imprisoned separately, and Kaelen does not know what became of him. His only confidant is Sora the Penitent, who has brought him bread weekly for twelve years. He knows Malakar's true name—learned in the first year, when the Warden came to the Forge in person and Kaelen heard the guards address him—and he has guarded that knowledge like a coal shielded from the wind, waiting for someone worth telling. When the party arrives, that wait is over: the Key of Absolution can be forged, the god's chains can be broken, and the smith who built a prison can finally build the key to its gates.
