Monster Description

The Plague Wyrm is a small yet potent dragon, notorious for its ability to spread disease if not dealt with promptly. This creature, with its emerald scales adorned with dark green spots, often lurks in damp and shadowy places of urban environments. It has a foul stench, like rotten leaves and spoiled meat, giving it away long before it is seen. Plague Wyrms are generally solitary creatures, preferring to live in high, secluded areas where the element of surprise can be a powerful weapon in their repertoire. Their wings are bat-like, and they are capable of slithering as elegantly as they can fly.
The Plague Wyrm’s breath is filled with miasma – a toxic vapor that causes sickness and decay. The disease they spread is highly contagious, often affecting not just their attackers but also their allies in combat. These dragons can enter buildings undetected, suffusing the air with their miasma and bringing a wave of sickness to entire city blocks. They relish in the chaos and panic that follows their appearance. When threatened, they can be surprisingly evasive, making the most out of their aerial capabilities to escape.
While they do not form die-hard alliances, Plague Wyrms are known to associate with mischievous and chaotic creatures like kobolds or goblins, providing a sinister addition to their schemes.
Despite their small size, these dragons instill fear in the hearts of those living in the city, especially when their presence is accompanied by outbreaks of disease. They are often the first sign that something sinister is afoot, and adventurers who wish to confront these beasts must be wary; attacking them could trigger an outbreak or worse, attract their hidden allies, and the subsequent chaos they sow.

Monster behavior

A cunning predator, the Plague Wyrm uses its speed and agility to outmaneuver foes. Rather than direct confrontation, it often strikes and retreats, using its miasma to weaken opponents before they can retaliate. The Plague Wyrm is fond of psychological warfare, often swooping down on unsuspecting prey to spread disease and retreating before they can strike back. It is known to ambush those who venture into its territory, launching itself from hidden perches on rooftops. On discovering a group of adventurers, it will try to make its presence known without being spotted, using stealth and surprise to its advantage.
If surrounded, the Plague Wyrm will use its breath weapon to create chaos before making a swift escape using its flight abilities. It thrives amid disorder and will look for opportunities to take down its foes one by one, stealthily picking off members of a group with its bite attack and spreading its infectious disease amongst them. Should it find itself in a dire situation, it has been known to resort to its reaction ability, Intricate Maneuver, to thwart the most significant threats. This dragon is quick to assess its enemies and will avoid direct conflict with strong fighters, preferring to play the long game of attrition instead.

Ecology

Plague Wyrms are highly adaptable creatures, primarily found in urban environments where they can easily access sources of sustenance - primarily rats, insects, and other vermin that breed in filth. They thrive in damp, shady areas, often making their homes in abandoned buildings, cellars, or even underground sewers.
Being opportunistic feeders, they have little need for a larger food source, instead opting to keep smaller ecosystem actors in check. This behavior makes them both a nuisance and a form of pest control in their habitats. However, when their numbers grow or their environments become excessively polluted, their conniving nature leads to sudden outbreaks of diseases that can affect populations.

History

The Plague Wyrm is said to have emerged from the depths of ancient cities plagued by neglect and pollution. Some stories attribute their origins to cursed dragons that were shunned and discarded during the ages of prosperity. As the story goes, these dragons persevered, adapting until they became something far more sinister. Their very existence serves as a reminder of the negative balance that can arise when nature is disregarded, and filth is allowed to thrive.
In recent times, their occurrences have become frequent as cities expand and urban jungles grow ever larger. Communities have become accustomed to tales of illness spreading swiftly after strange sightings of the small, darting dragon overhead. Should a Plague Wyrm be spotted, the town weary of its presence knows an outbreak is not far behind. This knowledge has sparked many an adventurer’s hunt to stem the tides of disease, leading to a rise in confrontations with this cunning creature.
